History & people

A domaine in context

01

The domaine traces its vineyard to the early 1900s, when Maurice Vacheron put together a little over a hectare. His son Jean added three hectares, mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, and in 1962 became president of the Sancerre growers. From 1965 Jean's sons, Jean-Louis and Denis, built the estate up.

From the mid-1990s the domaine began bottling single sites: its own listing dates Belle Dame, a Pinot Noir, to 1995 and Les Romains to 1997. Jean-Dominique joined in 1993 and his cousin Jean-Laurent, an oenologist who had been working abroad, came back in 2002; the two make the wines today. The BIVC listing shows organic, Demeter and Biodyvin labels, and the domaine says its wines have been certified organic and biodynamic since 2008.
