Read the landscape
Three broad geological families help organize the appellation. They are a beginning, never the whole explanation of a wine.
Soil family 01
Clay-limestone marl, visibly pale in many parcels and concentrated especially in the western part of the appellation.
Soil family 02
Limestone soils marked by many small pale stones at the surface; the regional vocabulary also includes the term cris.
Soil family 03
Clay-siliceous soils containing flint, called chailloux or silex in the appellation's local vocabulary.
A necessary note: soil does not determine flavor on its own. Exposure, elevation, vine age, vintage, farming, harvest timing and cellar choices all shape expression.
